Sudoku: A Healthy Lifestyle Choice for Older Adults
December 11th, 2009 by admin
Sudoku, of course, is essentially a puzzle-type game, like crossword puzzles. But although it involves problem-solving, it does not call for extensive general knowledge, linguistic proficiency – or even advanced mathematical prowess. Although Sudoku games have different levels of difficulty, they only require players to have two essential prerequisites: logic and, occasionally, patience.
By using logic and common sense, Sudoku players, at any age, enhance their thought processes and stimulate their ability to concentrate. For adults this can be particularly beneficial. Problem-solving games keep the mind active and are as important to adult brain health as physical exercise is to cardiac health, for example.
There has been an increasing amount of evidence in recent years indicating that lifestyle changes involving brain activity can increase and enhance brain function in adults. The old belief that brain cells, once damaged, cannot regenerate is now being questioned. A University of Edinburgh (Scotland) study shows that the neurons in dormant brain cells can be activated by the mental activity involved in problem-solving games like Sudoku. Another study apparently showed that older people who did four crossword puzzles a week had a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who did only one puzzle. The obvious inference is that this type of mental activity (problem-solving) may help stimulate increased brain cell connections, allowing the brain to function longer.
Challenging yourself with something new, like taking up a new hobby, also exercises the mind. If you have always enjoyed gardening, for example, take up knitting. If you play Bingo (which really does not involve much problem-solving or mental stimulation), switch to Sudoku.
An additional advantage to games like Sudoku is that solving the problem gives players a sense of accomplishment – and of being in control. While this is a positive feeling at any age, it is especially significant as we get older. The body and the brain are a single system, but it is often easier to accept being physically dependent than to relinquish control and have others make decisions for us.
Taking up Sudoku is a simple lifestyle choice that can help keep the minds of older players active and healthy. It’s a fun mental workout, a game anyone can play. All you really need is common sense, patience and some time.
